Nature reserves, landscape protection areas, national parks and other abundant natural settings offer unique adventures whether you are seeking hair-raising challenges in precipitous mountains, dreamy boat trips, or peaceful walks in these varied surroundings.

Most people associate Kjerringøy with Kjerringøy Trading Post, whose heyday was in the late 1800’s. The buildings there are still intact and today constitute one of the most important architectural memorials of the time. Here, wecan gain insight into the life and times of the Squire, an atmosphere masterly portrayed by Knut Hamsun, which is why the trading post has been used as a setting for the filming of many of his novels.

In summer 2009, you can join two weekends jam-packed with cultural activities in connection with Knut Hamsun’s 150 year jubilee. Read more in our article Hamsun-summer in Kjerringøy.

In the Zahlfjøsen (Zahlfjosen barn), the trading post’s old outbuilding, we find the exhibition “Hamsun in films and pictures.” The exhibition provides an insight into films based on Hamsun’s novels, many of which have been shot in Kjerringøy. Pictorial artist Karl Erik Harr’s new and comprehensive Hamsun Gallery is also located in the Zahlfjøsen. Nordland-type boats and other traditional clinker-built vessels are also built there by the Boatbuilder of Kjerringøy.

Culinary Experiences
In the immediate vicinity we also find Markens Grøde (Kjerringøy Farm). Here you can see how cheese is made. They also bake bread in a stone oven there, and cure meats from the farm’s own eco-production. You can taste the local growth of the earth in their nice, little cafe.

The magnificent natural surroundings are an adventure in themselves. Take a trip to Kjerringøy and be seduced by the soft, white, sandy beaches, the jagged peaks that plunge straight into the sea, the harmonious cultural landscape and the great diversity of countryside concentrated on this tiny peninsula. Kjerringøy is seventh heaven for children. Here they can freely explore and express themselves.

They can find a beach with shells, crabs and creepy-crawlies, or go for a walk at Fjære among grazing cows and sheep. If they have had enough of nature, they may like to visit Jentine, the maid at the trading post who will talk about life on the farm in the old days. And if the weather is too dull, the kids can calm down with a good book or draw what they have been doing in Kjerringøy at the library in the Zahlfjøsen barn.

Your journey here
Kjerringøy is only 40 km north of Bodø, a city where you will find a major airport, railway and Coastal Voyage vessels in the city centre. Check ferry timetables before you set off from the city. On the way to Kjerringøy you will have a welcome 10 minute break on the ferry, allowing you to adjust from “city mode” to “peace of mind mode”.

Go ashore on Kjerringøy, drive along the white, sandy beaches and feel a surge of adrenaline, as the singer Halvdan Sivertsen would have put it.
